Different Lung Cancer Treatments

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the lungs. There are different lung cancer treatments that can help to treat this problem. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the world, among both men and women. It claims more lives each year than do colon, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers combined.

Types of lung cancer

Doctors divide lung cancer into two major types based on the appearance of lung cancer cells under the microscope. Your doctor makes treatment decisions based on which major type of lung cancer you have.

The two general types of lung cancer include:

  • Small cell lung cancer. This type occurs almost exclusively in heavy smokers and is less common than non-small cell lung cancer.
  • Non-small cell lung cancer. It is an umbrella term for several types of lung cancers that behave in a similar way. Non-small cell lung cancers include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell

Stages of lung cancer

Cancer stages tell how far cancer has spread and helped guide treatment. The chance of successful or curative treatment is much higher when it is diagnosed and treated in the early stages before it spreads. Because it doesn’t cause obvious symptoms in the earlier stages, diagnosis often comes after it has spread.

Non-small cell lung cancer has four main stages:

  • 1: Cancer is found in the lung, but it has not spread outside the lung.
  • 2: Cancer is found in the lung and nearby lymph nodes.
  • 3: Cancer is in the lung and lymph nodes in the middle of the chest.
  • 3A: Cancer is found in lymph nodes, but only on the same side of the chest where cancer first started growing.
  • 3B: Cancer has spread to lymph nodes on the opposite side of the chest or to lymph nodes above the collarbone.
  • 4: Cancer has spread to both lungs, into the area around the lungs, or to distant organs.

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) has two main stages. In the limited stage, cancer is found in only one lung or nearby lymph nodes on the same side of the chest.

The extensive stage means cancer has spread throughout one lung or to:

  • the opposite lung
  • lymph nodes on the opposite side
  • fluid around the lung
  • bone marrow
  • distant organs

At the time of diagnosis, 2 out of 3 people with SCLC are already in the extensive stage.

Diagnosis

First of all, a physical examination will be done. Then your doctor will tell you how to prepare for specific tests, such as:

  • Imaging tests: An abnormal mass can be seen on X-ray, MRI, CT, and PET scans. These scans produce more detail and find smaller lesions.
  • Sputum cytology: If you produce phlegm when you cough, microscopic examination can determine if cancer cells are present.

A biopsy can determine if tumor cells are cancerous. Tissue samples are sent to a pathologist for analysis. If the result is positive for cancer, further testing, such as a bone scan, can help determine if cancer has spread and to help with staging.

For this test, you’ll be injected with a radioactive chemical. Abnormal areas of bone will then be highlighted in the images. MRI, CT, and PET scans are also used for staging.

Lung cancer treatments

Medications for lung cancer rely upon its area and stage, just as the general wellbeing of the person. It can be said that the treatments are different based on its symptoms. Also surely this cancer has some effects which make it one of the most dangerous types but still you can rely on treatments and although if you recognize it in the early stages nothing bad will happen and you can treat it well. So if you see any of these symptoms you should check out a doctor immediately.

Medical procedure and radiation are the most widely recognized ways to deal with treating lung disease, however, different medicines are accessible for different lung cancer symptoms. For instance, specialists regularly treat little cell lung disease with chemotherapy.

Possible treatments include:

Surgery

If lung cancer symptoms show the high stages of these disorders, a doctor may operate to remove cancerous lung tissue and tissue in the surrounding areas where cancer may have spread. This sometimes involves removing a lobe or large segment of the lung in a procedure called a lobectomy. There are also so many severe cases, in which the surgeon may remove a lung in its entirety. A person can live without a lung, but being in good health prior to surgery helps to improve outcomes after lung removal.

Chemotherapy

When you are using treatments such as drugs. There are also so many medications that target rapidly dividing cells, which makes them ideal for treating cancer. This also has a more significant impact on cancers that have spread to different parts of the body and require a body-wide attack. However, chemotherapy is a powerful intervention and can have side effects including extreme nausea and weight loss.

Radiation therapy

This approach uses high-energy rays to kill cancerous cells. A doctor may also use radiation to shrink a tumor before removing it surgically. Radiation therapy is mainly useful for cancers that occur in one location and have not spread.

Targeted therapy

This is also another treatment that is based on lung cancer symptoms. Examples include medicines that stop cancer cells from multiplying.

Lung cancer treatment often involves the collaboration of medical experts in many areas which again depends on its symptoms. These specialists may include:

  • surgeons
  • radiation oncologists
  • specialists in lung treatment called pulmonologists
  • pulmonary therapists

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy utilizes your insusceptible framework to battle malignancy. Your body’s infection battling insusceptible framework may not assault your malignant growth in light of the fact that the disease cells produce proteins that visually impaired the safe framework cells. Immunotherapy works by meddling with that procedure.

Palliative consideration

Individuals with lung malignant growth frequently experience signs and side effects of the disease, just as symptoms of treatment. Steady consideration, otherwise called palliative consideration, is a strong region of medication that includes working with a specialist to limit your signs and side effects. Also, this method has side effects, still it is one of the most effective lung cancer treatment.

Home remedies for lung cancer symptoms

Home remedies and homeopathic remedies won’t cure cancer. But they may help relieve some of its symptoms and side effects of treatment.

Ask your doctor if you should take dietary supplements. Some herbs, plant extracts, and other home remedies can interfere with treatment and endanger your health. Be sure to discuss all complementary therapies with your doctor to make sure they’re safe for you.

Options may include:

  • Massage: With a qualified therapist, massage can help relieve pain and anxiety. Some massage therapists are trained to work with people with cancer.
  • Acupuncture: When performed by a trained practitioner, acupuncture may help ease pain, nausea, and vomiting. But it’s not safe if you have low blood counts or take blood thinners.
  • Meditation: Relaxation and reflection can reduce stress and improve the overall quality of life in cancer patients.
  • Hypnosis: Helps you relax and may help with nausea, pain, and anxiety.
  • Yoga: Combining breathing techniques, meditation, and stretching, yoga can help you feel better overall and improve sleep.

Some people with cancer turn to cannabis oil. It can be infused into cooking oil to squirt in your mouth or mix with food. Or the vapors can be inhaled. This may relieve nausea and vomiting and improve appetite. Human studies are lacking and laws for the use of cannabis oil vary from state to state.

In brief…

When it comes to lung disease, one of the most important points is to choose the best method for lung cancer treatment. It is not going to be easy but sometimes there are so many things that you should know about its treatment which can be different depending on the stage of this disease.

If you see any symptoms you should check out a doctor immediately. Make sure that you are not self-prescribing because this cancer is not something to make fun with It and the method for lung cancer treatment should be chosen by your doctor.
