Slimming or weight loss surgery
Obesity is a chronic disease that is increasing in adults, adolescents, and children worldwide. The disease has been described by the World Health Organization as a global epidemic. In addition, obesity is an important risk factor for many comorbidities, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. Obesity surgery or slimming surgery helps people lose weight by changing the digestive system of our stomach and intestines.
Types of slimming operations
1- Gastric bypass slimming operation
It is one of the most well-known types of surgery that can be performed in two ways. The first method, which is more common, has no return, in which the upper part of the stomach is cut and the esophagus is attached to the rest of the stomach. In this bypass procedure, the volume of the stomach is reduced which results in eating less and less absorption. Another type of gastric bypass surgery is a complex procedure in which 80% of the stomach is removed and a large part of the small intestine is cut. This resulted in eliminating a large part of the gastrointestinal system, and as a result, decreased the amount of food consumed and the absorption of food is severely limited.
2- Laparoscopic abdominal banding operation
In this method, an adjustable band, such as a trouser belt, is placed in the upper part of the stomach, and after inflating it, it narrows the entrance of the stomach, which in fact creates a bag-like space that limits the amount of food received in the person. This band is adjustable and later can be removed from the body.
3- Gastric sleeve or gastrectomy
In this operation, the stomach is cut and transformed into a structure similar to a sleeve or tube. As a result of this reduction in stomach volume, a person receives fewer calories and loses weight. The choice of surgery depends on the doctor and the patient’s condition.
4- Stomach plication surgery
In this surgery, the stomach is folded like a skirt to make the inner space of the stomach narrower, and the same as other methods it reduces the calorie intake.
5- Intestinal bypass surgery
This procedure is usually done after a gastric sleeve, in which about three-quarters of the small intestine is cut, which includes part of the duodenum and the last part of the small intestine. The two ends of the intestine are then connected, and because the secretions of pancreatic and bile enzymes are located next to each other, these enzymes combine to fewer calories in the body.
6- Lipomatic slimming or sculpting
In the lipomatic slimming, local body fat is drained, which is painless and does not cause bleeding, and reduces the size of the body.
7- Liposuction or lipoplasty
It is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes excess fat from certain areas and works similarly to lipomatic slimming.
8- Abdominoplasty or cosmetic abdominal surgery
Abdominoplasty is a type of surgery in which excess fat and skin that has lost its elasticity are removed and the abdomen becomes firmer and shapelier. This surgery is mostly performed on women who gave birth or lost a huge amount of weight recently who have excess skin and now want to get rid of these skin.
