The world’s first and oldest artificial eye belongs to a woman between the years of 25 and 30 years old who has been found following archaeological discoveries in the city of Sukhteh in Sistan and Baluchestan province. According to studies, the woman’s body may be over 4,800 years old.The prosthetic eye has a hemisphere shape and a diameter of a little over 2.5 cm (1 inch). Its ingredients are very light and probably composed of bitumen paste, as well as the surface of the artificial eye is covered with a thin layer of gold and engraved with a central circle (representing the iris) and golden lines designed like sun rays as capillaries of the eye. Fine holes have been created on both sides of the eye through which a golden strand can keep the prosthetic eye in place.
The discovery of the surgical skull of a 13-year-old girl in the burned city revealed the true medical history in Iran, and archaeologists in the burned city as the most important archaeological area in Sistan and Baluchestan province during excavations in 1977 and in a mass grave discovered about 4,800 years ago and among the remains of skeletons of 13 buried individuals, found a young skull with the right part. A deep cut is a triangle shape, and based on the initial observations of archaeologists and subsequent anthropologists’ research, a surgery was performed to treat hydrocephalus on this skull, after discovering and examining this skull and finding answers to some questions, a book called “Collection of Articles in Sukhteh City” was written by Seyed Mansour Seyed Sajjadi in which articles by Hossein Sarhadi, Rohollah Shirazi and Hossein Moradi were collected.
In part of the book, the results of the study of this skull are written: In the initial studies conducted on this skull, the gender of its owner, female, was diagnosed and the age was estimated to be about 18 years old and there was a fracture in the bones in the lower part of the right root of the jaw. The skull was re-examined and revised and its definitive age of 13 years was determined by 6 to 9 months low or high. It was also observed in a horizontal view that the left parts of the back of the skull are larger than the right part of the skull, while the right front part of the skull is more prominent than the left one, so his face looks normal, but this person has an incredibly large skull, while he has a normal height.Doctors in the burnt city have attempted his surgery, but this patient has at least a few months after. He survived the surgery and then died.
