2min ReadLasek is a kind of surgery which is performed for vision correction. Lasek is a combination of techniques which are related to Lasek surgery along which PRK surgery. Like all other surgeries which are done within eyes, Lasek has the ability to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Comparing to Lasik, Lasek causes fewer amount of dryness in the eyes.
Lasek surgery is suitable for people with a thin cornea, because this surgery unlike the Lasik surgery, does not require a flap on the cornea. In the Lasik surgery, instead of creating a flap, a shear is made on the cornea with a blade; then the outer corneal layer is removed and the cornea is shaped by using a laser.
Duration of treatment
After the Lasek surgery, the person will experience pain for about 2 days and within 1 or 2 weeks will see the returning of the vision, usually, a contact lens and eye drops are prescribed for the patient to use them during recovery.

Preoperative care, procedure, and post-operative care
Before surgery
For 24 hours prior to surgery, avoid makeup and alcohol products such as perfumes and aftershaves and if you want to use any drugs or supplements ask your doctor if it is okay or not.
The process of the surgery
First, a cut is made on the eye; the outer layer of the cornea is removed and the cornea is soaked with an alcoholic dilution. Then by using an Oxymer laser devise, some parts of the corneal are removes and the cornea is being shaped to the proper position. The difference between Lasek operation and Lasik is that in Lasik the outer layer is pulled back in a form of the flap and it returns to its former place, but there is no such a part in Lasek surgery.
The Lasek surgery operates within local anesthesia and lasts from 30 to 60.
After the surgery
Lasek surgery requires more care than Lasik. Some people may feel a sense of burning or itchy eye in the eye which is being operated. It should be noted that the person should not rub his eyes and also should avoid showering and washing his hair for up to 24 hours after the surgery.
Some important things you should know about this operation:
Most people will see 20/20 or better after this surgery, and almost all people will see 40/20 or better. This operation is not recommended for the following people:
- Persons under the age of 21
- People with diabetes
- Pregnant women
- Lactating Mothers
- People with systemic deficits problems
- People with other eye problems like cataracts or glaucoma
Possible risks include:
- Infection
- Loss of vision
- Correction error (excessive or low separation)
- Growth the outer layer into to cornea
