Cosmetic Ear Surgery | Otoplasty
2min ReadCosmetic Ear Surgery, also known as Otoplasty, is an external ear (earlobe) correction surgery usually done to correct prominent ears, reduce the size of large ears, and rectify the defective ones. Otoplasty is typically done on both ears to optimize their adequate size and symmetry.
Recovery From Cosmetic Ear Surgery
The individual is expected to recover from the surgery within one week after the Otoplasty. He will be able to resume daily activities after five or seven days.
Related Preoperative Evaluations
The physician examines the person’s medical history before the surgery. During the physical examination, the ears are measured and their location, size, shape, and symmetry are examined.
Before, During and After Cosmetic Ear Surgery
Before the Procedure
The person is needed to avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding. Smoking slows down the healing process, hence the person is asked to avoid smoking before and during the recovery period as well. It is recommended for someone to stay with the patient on the first night of his or her recovery.
During the procedure
The details of Otoplasty depends on the difficulties the person confronts with. In most cases, the incision is made on the back of the ear or within the inner creases of the ears. After making the incisions, the excess skin and cartilage are removed. In this way, the ears are reformed and resized to the desired shape and position. Finally, additional stitches are used to close the incisions and the cartilage.
For adult surgery, Otoplasty is done using local anesthesia, while for children the general anesthesia is prioritized. The Otoplasty procedure typically takes one to two hours.
After the Procedure
To reduce the pressure off the ears, the person should avoid sleeping on the side. Also, he should try not to rub or place excessive force on the ears. Button-down shirts and loose-fitting collars are suitable after the procedure.
