Eyelid Surgery | Blepharoplasty
2min ReadEyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to remove puffiness under the lower eyelid and eyelid droop. This surgery is usually done for cosmetic reasons, but sometimes it can also improve vision by treating drooping eyelids, thus providing a less obstructed field of view.
Recovery From Eyelid Surgery
Bruising and eye swelling usually disappear from 10 to 14 days after surgery, and most people feel ready to go out in public and back to work in about 10 to 14 days.
Related Preoperative Evaluations
The individual will undergo physical exams before the procedure, such as eyelid measurement and vision tests, and the eye of the individual will be photographed from various directions. The medical history of the individual will also be reviewed.
Before, During and After Eyelid Surgery
Before the Procedure
If the surgery is scheduled to be performed under general anesthesia, the individual will be asked to avoid eating and drinking 12 hours before the surgery. Also, from several weeks before the surgery, he/she should avoid cigarettes and drugs that increase bleeding, such as warfarin, ibuprofen, and aspirin.
During the Procedure
The process of this procedure depends on whether the upper eyelid is operated on or the lower one. For upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made on the skin and the skin and fat are removed through this incision. Then the incision is closed with sutures. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the lower eyelash line or the lower eyelid, and according to the desired results, fat is either removed or injected. Then the incision is closed with stitches. This procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia and takes 1 to 3 hours.
After the Procedure
The site of the incision should be kept clean. It is advisable for the patient to have someone at hand to help him/her in case of having temporary vision-related complications. Swimming and exposure to sunlight should also be avoided. The individual will return to the surgeon’s office within a week to remove his/her stitches; However, if dissolvable stitches have been used, there’s no need to remove them, as these will dissolve on their own.
