Retinal Detachment
2min ReadRetinal detachments occur when the retina is separated from the surrounding tissue. If the retinal detachments happened, it must be treated, because the retina cannot do its duties while it is affected by this disorder and the failure to treat it can lead to permanent blindness. The retinal detachment of the eye is usually because of the retina’s teat and can cause eye damage and cataract surgery. Retinal detachment treatment means ways to overcome this problem. It should be noted that the treatment of this disease is almost always carried out through surgery.
Duration of treatment
It can be said that depending on the severity of retinal detachment in the patient, there are various treatments for this disease and the duration of treatment is also various in different persons, so it is probably right to say that the duration of treatment is not fixed and depends on the choice of treatment.

The doctor will pour droplets into the patient’s eyes to allow the pupil to dilate, then he will examine the patient’s eyes with great care and attention. When the severity of the injury has been determined, the doctor will choose the best treatment for the patient.
Preoperative care, procedure, postoperative care
Depending on the severity of the damage to the retina, one of these methods will be selected to treat this disease:
- pneumatic retinopexy
- scleral buckle
- laser or fusion
- vitrectomy
Before the surgery
According to the method, before the surgery, it is likely to pour some drops into the patient’s eyes and anesthetized him.
During the operation
Pneumatic Retinopexy is a technique in which a small gas bubble is injected into the patient’s eye and this bubble will return the retina to its main location.
In the scleral buckle way, there are some silicone bands which are wrapped around the outer surface to restore the retina to its main location. These strips are not visible and usually remain on the eye.
If the retinal detachment is detected in its early stages, laser or fusion ways can be used as the lighter methods.
Vitrectomy is an operation which in the process the vitreous layer is detached from the eye so that it can be accessed behind the eye and restore the retina to its main place.
These procedures are performed with the local anesthetic and last for 1-2 hours; however, it should be noted that this time can vary according to the chosen method for treating this disorder.
After the surgery
It is likely that after the surgery the eye will be inflamed and painful or swollen for a while. Most of the operations are required for the patient to take rest for the recovery.
Important points about the operation
Possible risk includes the followings:
- Bleeding within the eyes
- More ruptures retina
- A bruise around the eyes
- High pressure or swelling in the eye (which is also known as glaucoma)
- Eyes lens blur(cataract)
- Eye infection
Prescribing for

Duration of hospitalization
There is no need for hospitalization in the process of curing the retinal detachments.
